DAY 1: NAIROBI - ABERDARES. Pick-up from the airport or your hotel in Nairobi and drive on the 'East African Highway' on top of the escarpment from where you have a splendid view into the Rift Valley. We leave the main road and start climbing through pine and bamboo forest up to the gate of the Aberdares National Park, at an altitude of nearly 3,000 m. Lunch and game drive in the afternoon.
Huts/FB (Single rooms cannot be guaranteed)

DAY 2: ABERDARES. The Aberdares offer an exceptional rich diversity of habitat. Bamboo forest, lobelias, senecias, tall trees and open areas with Tussock grass. Bush and reed bucks, buffaloes, elephants and with a bit of luck a black serval can be found. You will visit some waterfalls and, if the road condition allows, hikes accompanied by an armed ranger above the treeline can be undertaken.

DAY 3: ABERDARES - LAKE BOGORIA. Our last chance to admire the mountain world before we drive down to into the Rift Valley. Lunch in Nakuru town. Passing sisal plantations and acacia trees we reach Lake Bogoria in the afternoon. The soda lake and its shores are a national reserve. It is a great experience to view the flamingos through the steam of the geysers.

DAY 4: LAKE BOGORIA. Early morning game drive along the lake. Walk along the lake shore to admire the geysers and flamingos. The lake region is a paradise for bird lovers. Lunch and swimming at the hotel. In the afternoon we return to the lake watching out for the greater kudu and maybe we could also find a leopard tortoise beside the road.

DAY 5: LAKE BOGORIA - SAIWA SWAMP NATIONAL PARK. The road leads up the hills and down into valleys. In the later afternoon we reach Saiwa Swamp, where we pitch the camp. If time allows you can enjoy a walk along the swamp.

DAY 6: SAIWA SWAMP NATIONAL PARK. In this rarely visited park you walk along a footpath and over small bridges built along the swamp. The park was created to protect the rare semi-aquatic sitatunga antelopes. But it also protects the endangered De Brazza monkeys. You might get the chance to see an otter swimming or feeding in the water.

DAY 7: SAIWA SWAMP - MOUNT ELGON. Just a short drive will bring you to the next destination, a clearing on the slopes of the extinct volcano Mount Elgon. In the afternoon we visit the Kitum caves, where clearly visible marks are left by elephants scratching minerals from the walls, and bats sleep on the ceiling. You may recall David Attenborough investigating the 'mystery of the scratch marks' here on one of his many ventures.

DAY 8: MT. ELGON NATIONAL PARK. We will go on an early morning, maybe chilly, drive to detect black and white Colobus monkeys and Sykes monkeys foraging on the ground. Waterbucks, bushbucks and buffaloes look on in curiosity. In the afternoon either a game drive or a hike to a view point to enjoy the view on surrounding hills and plains, accompanied by a ranger.

DAY 9: MT. ELGON - KAKAMEGA RAINFOREST. After a 3-hour drive the scene has changed completely. We are now surrounded by remnants of the West African rainforest. Flora and fauna of East and West Africa meet here. After a picnic lunch you will be guided by a local guide on narrow foot paths under tall trees. He will explain the use of different plants and trees while you hear the hornbills laughing up in the trees and see monkeys feeding on fruits.

DAY 12: RUMA NATIONAL PARK - NAKURU NATIONAL PARK. A long drive awaits you today. You pass Kenya's main tea plantations and can see tea pickers at work. (We ask you not to take pictures without first asking.) Lunch en route. Lake Nakuru national park will be reached in the afternoon.

DAY 13: NAKURU NATIONAL PARK. Morning and afternoon game drives. We watch the thousands of flamingos, observe antelopes, zebras, buffaloes and the rare Rothschild giraffes and search for lions and leopards. White rhinos are usually easy to meet on the open areas while the elusive black rhinos are harder to track down in-between bushes.
